Quiz: Should I Start a Blog?

Last Updated on

Blogging can be a fulfilling way to make money while working from home. But it’s certainly not for everybody. Let’s discuss the concept of blogging and at the end of the article, there will be a quiz to find out whether or not you’re actually ready to start your blog.

What do I need to know before starting a blog?

You don’t need to know anything before you start your blog. Some people will try to tell you that you need to be a content marketing-maven, but truthfully, you don’t need to know much about marketing or social media before you get going.

You will eventually need to learn marketing (but it’s not a crucial skill to have beforehand).

However, there are three questions you should ask yourself to determine whether or not blogging is the right choice for you:

  1. Do I love to write?
  2. Do I love to research?
  3. Do I love to read?

Let’s dive into each area.

Writing

If you start a blog, it’s obvious that you will need to have a passion for writing, or at least be disciplined enough to write lots. And thanks to apps like Grammarly, you don’t need to be a grammar-expert. You can learn as you go.

However, if writing every week (and even every day) isn’t something you think you’d enjoy, you might not want to start a blog.

Researching

You might not always be writing about topics you are familiar with, but it’s important to get your facts straight before publishing them online to your blog.

Do you like researching?

When I was trying to figure out if I should start a blog myself, the research was a huge reason why I wanted to start one.

I love research and while I know that it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, I personally enjoy spending hours reading through articles and books to try and find interesting facts and learn new things I can write about and share with my audience!

Which brings me to my next point…

Reading

Yes, reading! If you want to start a blog, it’s also important you enjoy reading. In order to research the pieces of content you’re putting together, you’ll need to read articles.

What type of blog should I start?

Ok, so if you’ve made it this far it’s safe to say that you enjoy writing, researching and reading (and that you’d make an excellent blogger)! Your next task is to choose your blogging niche.

And by that, I mean what should you blog about?

There are many different profitable blogging niches you can choose from. For example, you could start a lifestyle blog and detail your favorite home decor items and other general things about your life.

Or you could start a food blog and share delicious family recipes.

Here are some questions to help you decide what type of blog you should start:

  1. What do I know a lot about that I’d be able to create tons of blog posts on?
  2. What kind of things do I want to learn more about?
  3. What aspects of my life would I be prepared to share with the world?

Still unsure? Here are some popular blog niches:

  • Lifestyle
  • Fitness
  • Health
  • Parenting
  • Home
  • D.I.Y.
  • Crafting
  • Sewing
  • Gluten-free cooking
  • Baking
  • Finance
  • Saving money

There are so many different types of blogs you can start; feel free to use the ideas above!

Is starting a blog a good idea?

Even though blogging is hard work, it’s incredibly rewarding, especially when you’re able to make money and turn your blog into a business.

But some still wonder…”are blogs dead?” (nope, they aren’t) and “will it be worth my time to start blogging?” (yes, it absolutely will)!

People still read blogs every day. In fact, 77% of internet users read blogs regularly. Blogging is not only a place to share your thoughts but it can also turn into a full-time business (and make money for you).

Why I Started a Blog

Maybe you’re still on the fence about whether or not you should start a blog, so here’s my story.

I actually started my first blog in 2015 (it doesn’t exist anymore, but it was on the topic of marketing, just like this one).

I started that blog because I wasn’t being challenged in my current position at work.

And while I wanted to learn all I could about online and digital marketing, I just wasn’t able to learn as much as I could in my job.

So I decided to start blogging and learn as I went. Each week, I’d pick a new topic that I personally wanted to learn more about, and I’d draft up a blog post.

At the time, my only reader was my mom, but I didn’t care. I was learning and growing as both a marketer and budding B2B SaaS copywriter and I was thrilled to have my own website that I could share with the world.

In fact, at that time, I didn’t even know it was possible to make money blogging. I was simply using my blog as a learning tool.

Eventually, I quit my job and started my own business at which point I knew I’d need a blog if I wanted to bring in clients and build a community.

It was around that time that I also found out you could earn an income from your blog and let’s just say I was pretty excited that I could work from home with my dog snoozing in my lap while earning an income doing so.

And that’s how it’s been ever since.

It took me a year and a half before I saw enough money from my blog to pay my first bill.

That was an exciting time!

But my blog definitely wasn’t an overnight success and there was a lot of trial and error involved.

But was it worth it?

Absolutely!
