If you are asking yourself, “should I start a blog?” I’ve created a handy quiz that will hopefully provide you with some clarity! (You can find the quiz at the bottom of this article).

Should I Start a Blog: Important Questions to Ask Yourself

There are three main reasons why someone might start a blog:

  1. To make money
  2. To share their thoughts as fun
  3. A combination of the two

A lot of people get stuck when trying to figure out what they should blog about because they’ve been told that they need to be incredibly passionate about their blogging topic.

But if you want to blog for money, you don’t necessarily need to blog about your passion. You do, however, need the drive to write (a lot) and to research (a lot).

On the other hand, if you are just blogging to share your thoughts for fun, then by all means, blog about whatever you want!

Now, before you start your blog, let’s cover some important areas to make sure you are asking yourself the right questions before investing time (and a little bit of money) into starting a blog.

If you start a blog, it’s obvious that you will need to have a passion for writing, or at least be disciplined enough to write lots.

If writing every week (and even every day) isn’t something you think you’d enjoy, you might not want to start a blog.

However, if you love writing and are excited to grow your skills as a writer and blogger, then starting a blog is definitely something you should consider doing.

You might not always be writing about topics you are familiar with, but it’s important to get your facts straight before publishing them online.

Do you like researching?

When I was trying to figure out if I should start a blog myself, the research was a huge reason why I wanted to start one.

I love research and while I know that it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, I personally enjoy spending hours reading through articles and books to try and find interesting facts and learn new things I can write about and share with my audience!

Which brings me to my next point…

Yes, reading! If you want to start a blog, it’s also important you enjoy reading because reading and researching go hand-in-hand.

Commitment and Passion

Lastly, to start a blog you need to have a passion to blog. Blogging isn’t always easy and you might have to blog for a year before you see any real traffic.

Alternatively, you might notice your blog traffic explodes after only a couple of months.

It varies for person to person.

Personally, it took me two years of hard work before I exceeded my monthly income from my corporate job from my blog (and yes, there was lots of frustration along the way, but I had commitment and that’s why I was able to see success).

Why I Started a Blog

Maybe you’re still on the fence about whether or not you should start a blog, so here’s my story.

I actually started my first blog in 2015.

It was on a different domain and it doesn’t exist anymore. The topic was online marketing, just like it is now.

I started that blog because I wasn’t being challenged in my current position at work.

And while I wanted to learn all I could about online and digital marketing, I just wasn’t able to learn as much as I could in my job.

So I decided to start blogging and learn as I went. Each week, I’d pick a new topic that I personally wanted to learn more about, and I’d draft up a blog post.

At the time, my only reader was my mom, but I didn’t care. I was learning and growing as both a marketer and budding B2B SaaS copywriter and I was thrilled to have my own website that I could share with the world.

In fact, at that time, I didn’t even know it was possible to earn an income from blogging. I was simply using my blog as a learning tool.

Eventually, I quit my job and started my own business at which point I knew I’d need a blog for if I wanted to bring in clients and build a community.

It was around that time that I also found out you could earn an income from your blog and let’s just say I was pretty excited that I could work from home with my dog snoozing in my lap while earning an income doing so.

And that’s how it’s been ever since.

It took me a year and a half before I saw enough money to pay my first bill with.

That was an exciting time.

But it definitely wasn’t an overnight success and there was a lot of trial and error involved.

But was it worth it?
